An Evaluation of Teach First Plus

Funded by:

Gatsby Technical Education Projects

Timescale:

August 2004 - August 2007

The Teach First initiative attracts graduates to work as teachers for two years in challenging London secondary schools. Teach First, a business-led organisation with charitable status, recruits able graduates and places them in schools. During their first year they work as unqualified teachers and follow an employment-based initial teacher training route designed to lead to Qualified Teacher Status. In their second year they work as Newly Qualified Teachers, and undertake some leadership training. Following this, they may either stay in schools, or move on to a career in business or some other sector.

Gatsby Technical Education Projects (GTEP) provided funding for a series of interventions designed to increase retention of science, mathematics, design and technology and ICT teachers in schools; to encourage higher quality teaching in these subjects; and to develop vehicles for participants continued involvement in schools if they decide to move on to other careers.

GTEP funded IPSE to evaluate these interventions over a three-year period. To conclude the project a report was submitted to GTEP detailing the findings of our evaluation.
