Google Images

Google Image Search
Useful for checking dates, titles and location of artefacts. Check that the information is from a reputable site. Once you have done your search, click on the ‘search tools’ option followed by the 'usage rights' option to select images licensed for sharing. Otherwise, copyright permissions should be cleared with the website owner or rights holder.

Visual Arts Data Service(UK). The Visual Arts Collections cover many subjects, from architecture to textiles. Keyword searches can be made across collections. There is a 'lightbox' to store your selections. Includes the Design Council Archive.
A new feature, The Learning Index, offers a series of downloadable, image-based learning and teaching materials. Open access, free. For personal, educational and research use.

    Creative Commons have devised licences to allow creators to share their images under specific conditions. You can use Xpert Media search and attribution service for CC licensed images.

  • Flickr
    A photo-sharing site with billions of public photographs, which include many images licensed under Creative Commons.

  • Image*After
    High-resolution images for free download: textures, nature, architecture, signs etc. Search results can be sorted by colour. Copyright-cleared, no attribution required. Beware of using images of logos.

  • MorgueFile
    High resolution stock photography. Free photo archive. Check terms and conditions attached to each image – attribution is not always required and it may be permissible to adapt images.

  • Wikimedia Commons
    You are allowed to copy, use and modify any Wikimedia Commons image files freely, provided you comply with the terms specified by the image’s creator. Images are licenced under Creative Commons.

  • New York Public Library Digital Gallery

    Access to over 700,000 images digitized from Library's vast collections, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs. Low resolution images may be used for private study and educational purposes. Reproduction fee is payable for higher resolution images. Rights holders’ permission may need to be obtained before images can be used. Check terms and conditions carefully.

    Searchable and browsable. WorldImages is accessible anywhere and its images can be freely used for non-profit, educational purposes. The copyright holder must be credited.

  • Yale Digital Commons
    Works in the Yale museums and libraries collections. Those images that are in the public domain may be used without restriction, provided they are credited. However, this isn’t the case for everything refer to the rights information attached to each image for more information.
